New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions.
-Mark Twain-

My new years resolution is the same every year and I always keep it. It is "I resolve to make no New Years resolution". -tom swaim-

Old Fools Journal: Steampunk Geezer at Work or what's that oldfool done now.

What does it do? It moves and makes smoke. What's it for? Nothing. It's a do nothing machine. Why?
Because it was thunder storming all day so I was stuck indoors and I felt like piddling around. Watch the movie I took with my Kodak. I love my Kodak.

Here are some working gears. I believe the two drills at the bottom are older than I am. I don't remember when I got the one at the top or the one at the bottom but the one in the middle I got when I was twenty. It came with my first wife because it had belonged to her father who had passed away. These tools are not for display and are used regularly as needed. It was a busy day in the sand box and play room. Nothing constructive was done. I accomplished all that I set out to do, Very satisfying.

I see you are taking the recommendations from the International Institute of Not Doing Much to heart. If they offer awards, you should be eligible for one of them.

I was actively following advice from the IINDM, but it wore me out. It's much easier to just lay on the sofa and stare at the ceiling.

I remember using a hand drill like the one on top in shop class in 7th grade. The shop teachers wouldn't allow any of us to use power tools until 9th grade.

I tried laying on the sofa and staring at the ceiling but it makes me sleepy so it ends up just being another nap which I am not opposed to. Many years ago when I lived on my boat in Lahaina, Maui, Hi I spent four days staring at the ocean. I stopped only to eat and sleep otherwise I just stared at the ocean. There was no great awakening so I went back to doing stuff. I guess I'm too shallow to meditate my way into nirvana.

More about the drills: The one your are referring to is the newest made of pot metal, steel and wood. There is no plastic in it. I suspect it is from the '30's. The other two are all steel and wood and have more handwork in them. They are old enough to have oil holes back when tool makers thought lubrication was desirable. With out the oil holes they get really stiff. The newer one is very much a problem to free up when it needs lube.
None of them say where they were made.
They are well made. I used the small one yesterday.
