Old Fools Journal: Dickmas

or My Birthday

One of my neighbors youngest daughters has the same birthday as myself (March 5) and she invited me to come celebrate it on Saturday March third. The birthday girl is a lovely child and is five years old today. When I arrived this is what I was presented. Was I surprised? I can't say I was surprised because she ask a lot questions in a conversation that made me suspicious besides I already knew she was that kind of thoughtful person. Her blog is here. Now I would have been surprised if the cake had 73 lit candles on it. The fire department would have been surprise as well and would probably think that poor judgement was used. The last time I tried that was SWMBO's (she who must be obeyed) 65th. Sixty five candles put out a lot of heat and which was melting the cake.

I don't get out much and I am not comfortable in a crowd which I define as more than three people but I was immediately put at ease by my gracious hostess and host. That is the second time I have visited that family and they make me feel comfortable somehow and I can't put my finger on it. I think I have some new friends.  I don't think I did anything that was socially unacceptable and I was the last to leave so I adapted to the situation I guess. I passed an enjoyable time but when I got home I collapsed into the bed exhausted.

I haven't had a lot of practice at visiting people's home as this is the only family that has invited me into their home in 19 years. The key word here is invited.

The cake was delicious.
1980 something China made for the American market Raleigh. Sturmey Archer 3 spd
As if the cake wasn't enough this was the bonus. It was Jack Russell's (grandfather to the birthday girl) who did what all of us will do eventually and passed last year. I only met him once but I was looking forward to knowing another old fart that I could stand to be around. If our first meeting was an indication of things to come we would have passed a good time. I don't know anything about Raleigh's but I'm about to find out.
Good grief, birthdays sure come around fast. Einstein was right about time being relative. It is for me in this universe at least  . Seventy three times I've made it around ole' Sol. Each one is quicker and I seem to be picking up speed. I think that those that are older can relate to that.

I have to say not much has changed except myself of course and that is all I can account for. I got older but I can't say whether I am wiser or not. I did get smarter but then even a fool can get smarter.  I'm working on getting wiser but it's slow going and I know that the second I think I am wise I will do something unwise to put me in my place. It's probably caused by the Irish blood of which I am proud. I may not be so wise but at least I'm housebroke.

I started this day as I always do on my birthday by thinking of Mom and punishing myself for not being a more attentive son.  I see a lot of examples around me to make me appreciate our relationship. We never had cross words, oh she scolded me when I was a child but that was her job and without her guidance I don't believe my life would have been so happy. When I became an adult she treated me like an adult but I knew that I was still her little boy. I made her cry once and I'm going to have to carry that guilt to my grave.

I get that out of the way early then get on with living. Thanks Mom. I was laying awake at 0245 the hour of my birth this morning. Now that was spooky.

I usually buy myself a present but this year I haven't. I really want a scythe but that is a homestead tool and is usually included in maintenance cost. I think I'll save my money until I find one.  They are kind of scarce.  Oh yeah, I know what they are all about, I have had them before and I am proficient. I just know that someone wants to lecture me about this.

I'd like a stack of lumber too and some grass hay or straw for mulch. Oh well, "wish in one hand and spit in the other and see which one gets full first" as Pop used to say.
We planted the Avocado tree I started from seed on "Dickmas Eve". I had an good time working with SWMBO in the garden. It doesn't always go that way as we disagree on nearly everything. It keeps me in line as I am often wrong. She makes me think about everything I do. Like most males I sometimes do things without thinking them out first. That's how my arm got banged up.

We received a package from Michigan Bulb Saturday of  things that need planting right away so today I'm off to bring home some soil to mix with this clay we live on.

A man made of dirt working in dirt to celebrate a birthday. I wonder what the"space Aliens" think about that.

Happy Birthday. BTW, that picture is of of a harvesting scythe. Try to find one with a straight handle and slightly straighter blade. They are called mowing scythes and work real well. When I was younger I could mow grass very quickly and easily with one. You learn to swing easy and never put too much energy into it.

Happy birthday!

My grandfather had a scythe, at first I found that cool, but I found out they are closely related to wheelbarrows, in a certain way.

I just realized, after 2 years of knowing you, that you are born in the same year as my father.
Makes me wonder what and how he'd write if he had a blog... and if, on his birthday, he'd write his life has been happy...

The folks at Lehman's Hardware are really nice people. I've had the honor of being an invited guest of theirs a couple of times. I even bought a scythe in pieces parts one time. Never got it put together, and I think it fell by the wayside. Or maybe it's in a storage unit in MO at this point. Not really sure. Anyway, I figure you prefer not new, but this is a good second.

Oh, and Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday, OF... What a sweet thing for your neighbors to do. It sounds as if you go visiting as much as I do... I always find it very tiring when around people.. guess I get used to the thoughts in my own head and having several voices coming at me at the same time is a lot to concentrate on... I always need a rest afterward too...

... your avocado tree looks very healthy... it will be great to watch it grow this summer... take care.

I am giving you a scythe for your birthday... your choice... I have four. You have to come and get it though ;)

Happy Birthday Boss.

Raleigh. Does that rhyme with Yugo?

A scythe with a big fat bow on it would look great next to the cake. Happy birthday old(er) fool.

Thanks to all. This birthday was the best I've ever had. I say that almost every year but this was clearly the real best.

DD: I stole the picture but you gave me some search ideas. I had an inbetweener in theh early '70's that I used to cut wild oats for the horses with. It did a very good job.

Johann: Don't need no stinking steel messh leggings with a scythe if you are holding the snath. Now a swing blade is a different story. I am deadly (to myself) with one of those. In the early days I did have an incident with a scythe while hanging it up but I missed my neck by a quarter inch.

Jock: I added a picture that plainly states "manufactured in Taiwan" which is still in China. I think that during the '80's Huffy was the license holder for Raleigh USA.

Steven I don't think I'll be traveling any where soon but that does not mean I wouldn't like to.

Hugs to the ladies and a handshakes to the men. If you are in between you get both.

The day was finished by transplanting some heirloom tomatoes, stevia, and Greek oregano after which my Nurse fixed me a plate of biscuits and gravy (comfort food) and fed me my favorite cake which is pie. I ate a quarter of an apple pie made from scratch. I do mean from scratch starting with apples, flour, spices, butter and lard. For a moment there I was transported to the fictional heaven.

The best was having a long conversation with my daughter who I not only love with all my heart but I dearly like her with all my heart too.

OF. Don't tell the Taiwanese that they're part of China ;)
The US has sold billions worth of weapons to them and promised to defend Taiwan if China tries to take it.

400 years ago I spent quite a few hours manning a nicely balanced curved handled scythe. In the hands of a skilled user the swing is a thing of beauty; in the hands of a fool they are an accident waiting to happen.

Jock: When I was in Taiwan in 1961 and 1962 the people there call it Formosa. The Strait of Formosa is where we spent our time defending the Republic of China. The mainland Chinese were shelling civilians on the island of Amoy so we would go there and dare them to shell us. They had the good sense not to.
It was common for the people to call themselves "Free China". They thought they were the real China.

Much to many Americans Hong Kong is Chinese as well and was when the white man was still living in caves and trees.

Belated birthday wishes, Oldfool.

Give the wheelbarrow a good talking to while you heal well.

I wish you many sunny and well-watered days planting and sowing with SWMBO. The well-watered bit is for the garden AND for you.

Personally, and I'd bet I'm not alone thinking this, I think you are probably much more wise than you give yourself credit for.

Cheers,
Eileen in Little Rock

A late happy birthday wish. If you lived closer I would give you a really nice old scythe. Instead I`ll have to think about you and your nurse when I use it! I enjoy following your gardening. Badmother

OF. I get your drift. Ethnically the Taiwanese are the same as the Chinese.
Us Scots get called English all the time ( mainly by North Americans). Although we're a different country we're pretty much the same in ethnicity.
Scotland gets a referendum on independence in 2014 so wish us well :)
You've travelled far and wide during your career. I've seen most of the world during my time in the Forces but never managed to visit Taiwan.
