I like all kinds but my favorite have a thin layer of masa around a core of filling of about 3/4 inch.  Many that I have had have been a big glob of  masa with a tasteless pencil sized core.  Those can be eaten but they taste like crap. SWMBO makes a them with a filling of shredded or chunk pork usually mixed with chiles. She also spices the masa itself.  I like red chiles in this case because they add color.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She's making another batch today spiced for me as I told her that the last batch was only fit for women and children. I may be in for it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A tamale in  a bowl with a ladle of chile con carne over the top is an excellent lunch.  I also love canned tamales and have since I was a kid. There's one that sells chile rellenos that are magnificent.
